Nutrition Trends For 2015

We have been scouring the headlines to bring you some of the top nutrition trends for 2015. Some of them are new, while some are old favorites that are finally breaking through and making it into the mainstream.

1. Mediterranean diets go mainstream

The Mediterranean diet has been on the radar of scientists, nutritionists, dietitians and healthy lifestyle consumers for at least a couple of decade. At each meal, fill one-third of your plate with low-fat protein and two-thirds with colorful carbohydrates, primarily vegetables and a small amount of fruit. Last, add a dash of healthy fat, like that found in olive oil or nuts to protect your brain, help combat obesity, and live longer!

2. Sprinkle Your Superfoods?

This year, many registered dietitians (54 percent) named seeds and nuts as the superfoods that will reign in 2015. Kale remains the Queen of Greens though, with most of nutrition experts agreeing that kale, Greek yogurt, coconut products and avocado are prevailing healthful food choices for consumers.

3. Souping is the new juicing

You don’t have to suffer through a juice cleanse now that “souping” is the new juicing. Just like juice, soup cleanses aim to detox the body by giving it a break from excess sugar, gluten, alcohol, and other dietary evils. So, instead of filling up on water, lemon, and cayenne, a soup cleanse allows you ingredients like butternut squash, beets, lentils, mushrooms, kale, and steel-cut oats—plus it packs at least two servings of vegetables per bowl.

4. Low-Fat Fizzles

Although low-carb will remain a strong nutrition trend, low-fat will get weaker. For a consecutive year, the overwhelming majority of dietitians predict that the low-fat diet will fall flat in 2015, with only 4 percent naming it as a popular eating trend among consumers. In the battle of the fats, 84 percent of nutrition experts agree that consumers should replace saturated fat with good fats (mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids).

5. Old Is New

Despite the popularity of some low-grain diets, half of dietitians agree that ancient grains, such as amaranth, quinoa, spelt, KAMUT® and freekah, will be a top trend in 2015.

6. Bone Broth

Bone broth has been super popular in the Paleo world for years, but it’s now gaining more popularity as it’s being sold at coffee shops and the like. We are predicting that there will be a lot more nutrition-seekers than calorie-counters in 2015. Dietitians also predict that “clean eating” and the Paleo diet will continue as popular eating trends.

7. Organic Plus

Organic dairy has been very popular, but grass-fed/pasture-raised dairy will add another layer to food choices in 2015. The ideal, healthiest dairy is now organic, non-GMO, grass fed and pasture raised!

8. Pump up the Protein

Lean high-quality protein from meat and vegetable sources is on the rise. Gluten-free is still popular, but protein is making a big comeback. Consumers insatiable hunger for protein is showing everywhere in every conceivable form of natural and organic brand. Cricket bar any one?

9. Hear the Roar

When is a nut not a nut? When it’s a Tigernut! Tigernuts, a flavorful, earthy root vegetable that originates from Spain, will become a widespread snack and ingredient for baking. Tigernut milk will become a popular alternative to those who are lactose and nut intolerant.

10. Butter is Back

With fewer and fewer people fearing fat in their diets, butter is set for a comeback—on and in everything—bulletproof coffee anyone? Similar to butter, flavored coconut butter provides healthy fats, which will be working their way into everyone’s diets!
