Trick or treat!

It’s time to ask ourselves if we’re giving a handful of tricks or treats to the ghouls and goblins out there. The ingredients listed below are all commonly found in popular candy brands you might find in your Halloween bowl this month. Beware…

Shellac or Confectioner’s Glaze

Confectioner’s Glaze, or Shellac, is a resin secreted from a Lac insect.

Candy that contains carmine: Sugar Babies

Gum Base

Gum base, often found in sticky candies and chewing gum is made of petroleum, or synthetic latex rubber.

Candy that contains gum base: Orbit Gum

Tertiary Butylhydroquinone

A food preservative derived from butnane, also found in lighter fluid.

Candy that contains tertiary butylhydroquinone: Butterfinger Candy Bars.

Sometimes hidden behind the label:”natural flavors,” castoreum can be derived from beaver urine. (Yes, we’re serious.)
