It’s always fun to stroll down famous Fifth Avenue in December to look at the decorated store windows during the holiday season. While doing just that I walked into the iconic Saks department store and happened upon the cutest dogs making their way down the ASPCA red carpet.
At the cosmetics and fragrances section of the store, Saks was promoting the ASPCA during
Pamper Your Pooch Day by offering customers all kinds of pet incentives and dog adoption. Shoppers and their pooches could get a portrait taken, a pet astrology reading and enjoy a pet Yappy Hour complete with treats for a donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASCPA). They were even giving out doggy bags!
The star pups that were making their appearance were rescue dogs dressed in special fashion wear reading “adopt me”. The pooches responded so lovingly to the hugs and kisses they received from their fans. These stars of the day were older dogs and have health issues, which made adoption even more compelling. What a wonderful holiday gift to give.
Making more than just a fashion statement, the ASPCA has been working hard to bring an end to suffering of animals nationwide for 146 years. Since 1866 they have been speaking on behalf of animals such as dogs, cats and horses. It is the first humane organization established in the Western Hemisphere and has one million supporters. They also provide national leadership in government affairs and public policy, shelter support, animal poison control and medical treatment when necessary.
There are many ways to get involved in this iconic organization-donate, volunteer, adopt a pet, be an activist, etc. in a town near you. Their NYC headquarters houses a full-service animal hospital, animal behavior center and adoption facility.
After Hurricane Sandy many pets were displaced as well as their owners so the ASPCA stepped in. There are over 15 million pets in the Tri-State area so a daunting number of these families were affected. At the Saks event, an ASPCA staffer told me the non-profit set up a 25,000 square foot facility in to offer shelter to so many who have been displaced.
