I’ve always been very “crafty”! With a mother who sewed and a grandmother who knitted, I was off to a great start. I love that I know how to do these things; it makes me feel close to them both.
Being pretty impatient, even as a kid, they both exhibited infinite patience in teaching me skills that allowed me to make my own clothes as a teenager when funds were scarce! Even now, I inspect all the seams when I buy clothes and am often really disappointed at how badly made they are.
Although I have very little free time, I always have several projects on the go at the same time. These days, my knitting projects are undertaken less for creating a stunning piece but more for relaxing — something I can pick up and put down whenever the mood strikes. I get a lot of pleasure from making things that look as good on the “inside” as they do on the “outside”.
Weaving in the ends of yarn, making neat edges…I don’t know why, but it’s really satisfying. My latest project that I finally finished after 3 years was super simple. Using up yarns I have (and I have a lot) to knit a colorful wrap. Playing with the colors and textures was a lot of fun, and I love the finished result. Considering I wear black a lot of the time, this really brightens up my wardrobe!
