Insider Guide To Vintage Shopping In NYC

by April Donelson

Spring is finally here, which means it’s time to update your wardrobe!

Front General Store (143 Front St, Brooklyn, NY 11201 P: 347.693.5328)

Everyone knows that if your looking for the best in vintage clothing you go to Brooklyn, walk through the trendy Williamsburg and you can hit one vintage store after another, but I decided to check out this little hidden treasure in the up-and-coming DUMBO area. Front General Store, owned by Hideya Sagawa opened in 2013 and has since become a hot spot for both men and women to find an amazing selection of vintage American items including clothing, hats, jewelry and my personal favorite the sunglasses. The style of all the items in the store I would describe is classic American vintage, think vintage Ralph Lauren, All Saints and Anthropologie but half the price.

Some of my favorite items for Spring that I found were a lot of white eyelet lace tops and dresses paired with some sort of a floral print whether that be on a skirt, shoes or bag and of course always a hat. A good vintage hat (cowboy, panama, sun hat, pork pie, etc.) can be a little pricy, but you have to realize that it is an investment piece and will last you forever…and can be paired with almost any outfit for Spring/Summer!

In addition to women’s clothing Front General Store also offers a great selection of classic men’s items as well including everything from tailored suit jackets and pants, army jackets, vintage tee’s and an amazing selection of knit ties which is a nice switch up from the classic woven tie.

Look One: 100% Silk Jones New York Sleeveless Floral Top ($48) and High Wasted Side Button Shorts ($48) Look Two: Eyelet Lace Tank Top ($98), Front Button Printed Long Skirt ($58) & my own Panama Hat.

Star Struck Vintage (47 Greenwich Ave, New York, NY 10014 P: 212.691.5357)

If your looking for real vintage clothing, I’m talking cocktail dresses from the 1930’s, Western wear, 1980’s acid washed denim and vintage concert tee’s from Led Zeppelin and Lynard Skynard…Star Struck Vintage is the spot!

This small shop in Greenwich Village may appear to be just your typical thrift store, but I was lucky enough to find a few hidden treasures that would be fun additions to any fashion risk-takers wardrobe. My favorite being this rare Vintage Denim Jacket ($85) bleach dyed with some. The wide selection of cowboy boots was what caught my eye, pairing a nice broken in pair of black or brown leather boots (maybe a pair with a little bit of snakeskin too!) with a pair of denim shorts and eyelet lace top for an outdoor concert or paired with a knee length dress for

Other Favorite Spots: Tokyo Joe (334 E. 11th St, New York, NY 10003 P:212.473.0724 & Buffalo Exchange (332 E. 11th St, New York, NY 10003 P:212.260.9340

Armani Exchange Jacket ($60) and a Silk Printed J Crew Top ($18)

Lace Poncho With Tassel ($18.50), High Wasted Denim Shorts ($12) and Printed Gaucho Pants ($28)

If you are looking for more designer vintage clothing Tokyo Joe in the East Village is a great spot, most of their clothing and accessories are from big name designers such as Louboutin, Diane Von Furstenberg, Gucci and Marc Jacobs, but also a good mix of affordable well known brands such as DKNY, Armani Exchange and J Crew. Of course everything is a bit pricy for vintage but everything is only slightly used and how could you say no to a pair of Dolce & Gabbana Jeans?!

Located right next door is the amazing Buffalo Exchange, with locations in Chelsea, East Village, Brooklyn and Queens there are endless options of amazing new & recycled fashion, accessories and shoes to choose from! The prices are amazing, everything is on-trend with what is in style with the season and you can even bring in your old clothing to exchange for something new. I highly suggest checking this place out, I even convinced myself after visiting here that whenever I’m in need of a shopping spree to head to Buffalo Exchange before 5th Ave!
