Earth Day will be upon us on Friday April 22. What will you do to keep this country’s health, not just on Earth Day, but everyday?
A nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to maintain the planet and the U.S. a better place to live in is Keep American Beautiful.
Keep America Beautiful was started in 1953 by a group of corporate and civic leaders to have public and private entities develop and promote a national mindset of cleanliness throughout the country.
Their initial emphasis was the prevention of littering, from which the name “litterbug” was coined and created various PSA’s to get the word out to the public that littering was not a good thing for the environment. They initiated studies revealing three reasons why people litter, and seven main sources of litter.
In 1965 the First Lady of the United States, Lady Bird Johnson, joined Keep America Beautiful in promoting highway beautification and brought to mind that the littering of public highways must be stopped.
Throughout the years, Keep America Beautiful through affiliations with well known personalities, campaigns, the formation of various organizations, education of recycling, the plight of graffiti and incorporating the efforts of thousands of volunteers, both corporate and private, has until the present time continually emphasized the idea that littering of our landscape is detrimental to our environment and we should maintain the beauty of our communities that we live in.
Don’t know what to do on Earth Day? Be a volunteer with Keep America Beautiful and donate your time and financial support to make your community a better place to live in.
