Instead of cream and sugar in your coffee, how about some butter? There is a food trend making headlines this year called Bulletproof coffee, or butter coffee, that many people are getting behind, especially Paleo dieters, as well as celebrities like Shailene Woodley and Joe Rogan.
While you wouldn’t think adding butter to your coffee is healthy, Bulletproof’s website, claims the drink boasts a number of benefits. The drink is made up of a combination of low-toxin coffee, unsalted, grass-fed butter and MCT Oil (medium chain triglycerides), which are comprised of fat from coconut and palm kernel oil. You can also use coconut oil instead, which may be easier to find.
Silicone Valley entrepreneur Dave Asprey trademarked the “Bulletproof coffee” term after a trip in Tibet where he was introduced to yak butter tea, which is used for lasting energy. People in Tibet have been putting butter in their coffee for centuries.
The claims are that this concoction will give you about six hours of even energy without a caffeine crash. The way it works is the healthy fat you consume from the butter and the coconut will slow down the absorption of the caffeine, which is why your energy lasts longer. In addition, this drink, which can range anywhere from 100-300 calories depending on how much butter you use, fills you up and satiates you so you aren’t hungry mid-morning. Typically, people swap this beverage for their regular breakfast completely. In addition, this drink helps with weight loss and boosts brain function, giving you laser focused attention. Sounds like the perfect solution for that Monday morning meeting!
After reading all of the benefits, and being a huge coffee lover, I had to try it for myself. To be honest, it tasted pretty good! It tasted like a very creamy latte and was quite delicious.
To make the butter coffee for yourself, here is what you’ll need:
- 2 cups of coffee made with low-toxin beans
- 1-2 Tbs MCT Oil (or Coconut Oil)
- 2 Tbs unsalted, grass-fed butter like Kerrygold
For your first cup of butter coffee, you may want to start out with a little bit less MCT Oil/Coconut Oil and butter until you get used to drinking this beverage.
Mix all of the ingredients in a blender for about 20-30 seconds until the mixture is frothy like a delicious latte, and enjoy! For added flavor, add cinnamon, vanilla, dark chocolate or Stevia.
