Each month we ask a new eco-maven 18 questions about his or her life, occupation and advice for other like-minded people. This month we connected with Founder of women’s world-leading activewear brand, Lorna Jane Clarkson. Designed by active women for active women, Lorna Jane delivers not only sporty, sexy and stylish activewear, but also an ‘Move Nourish Believe’ philosophy, to continually empower and inspire a worldwide sisterhood of women to embrace active and healthy living!
1. What is your name (and age)?
Lorna Jane Clarkson, 49.
2. What is your occupation?
I am the founder and Chief Creative Officer of my own Active Wear label, Lorna Jane—a brand that represents my Active Living philosophy and that inspires women to get MORE out of life by giving MORE of themselves every day.
3. Do you have a “green” memory growing up?
Being “green” wasn’t really something that people considered back then. However, I do remember that my parents taught my siblings and me not to be wasteful and that is something that I still live by today… Thanks, Mum!
4. What’s your favorite meal?
It is really hard for me to choose between dessert and breakfast because most of the time the ingredients are close to or pretty much the same. Right now I am loving my homemade granola with cinnamon, pears and coconut yoghurt and overnight soaked oats with figs, macadamia nuts and honey. Delicious… for breakfast or dessert!
5. Who/What inspires you to be more “green” in your life?
Because I come from a generation where being “green” was not a part of our upbringing, I have found that most of my inspiration comes from the next generation. It is the children in my family and my staff that encourage me to be more “green.”
6. Where on the “green scale” do you fall?
Well, I am not sure how the “green scale” is measured but if there is a greener way to do something I will always give it a try… so you tell me… how do I rate?
7. What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?
I LOVE what I do and I feel unbelievably privileged to have the opportunity to spread the message of Active Living to women all over the world. When your job and your passions are so closely intertwined, it is a daily challenge not to allow it to become all consuming! This said, I can think of no better way to spend my days, my years and my life.
8. Where’s your “greenspot”: food, body care/beauty, oceans, home or neighborhood, explain
I try to be as “green” as possible in everything that I do, but my green spot would have to be my beach house. I never tire of taking long walks with my dog, the sand between my toes and the wind in my hair. There is just something incredible about nature that truly grounds you and makes you feel alive.
9. Where do you turn for your news?
I can’t say that I have a preferred source, as I am not an avid follower of the news; however, sometimes I am able to catch bits and pieces on the radio when I’m driving to work. Other than that, I usually learn about most current events through conversation with friends or if I read it in the weekend paper.
10. What is one environmental change you vow to make in the next year?
I recently converted both of my homes and our Lorna Jane Head Office in Australia to solar energy. This year I plan to do the same at our USA Headquarters.
11. If you could trade places with one person from any time in history (past or present) for one day—who would it be and why?
I find this question unbelievably hard to answer and I can’t say that there is any one person that comes to mind. I think I would rather concentrate on being MYSELF and making my own ding in the universe!
12. You have a meeting with the leader of every country in the world. You have 30 seconds to tell them anything you want. Go!
Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it is inspiring.
13. You have the chance to send one tweet to all the tweeps in the world. Let’s hear it in 140 characters, or less!
Dream big—the bigger and crazier the better. Follow your dreams and never, never, never give up!
14. If there was one industry/product that you could make more eco-friendly, what would it be?
With how much I travel, I have to say transport; land, sea and air.
15. Where in the world would you most like to be right now?
You know, I can honestly say that I am happy where I am here in Brisbane, Australia. Now, I am planning for an upcoming vacation so I can’t say that I am not looking forward to that, but right now I am working on my latest range of active wear and about to launch my new book. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
16. What is the best book you have read recently?
I am an avid book reader and usually tend to be reading couple books at one time. However, lately I have been spending all of my down time working on MY new book, Nourish… so, I guess that would be the best book I have been reading… and reading… and re-reading to make sure that it is absolutely perfect for its release in July.
17. What makes you cringe?
Current Affairs shows. They are always so negative.
18. What do you want your legacy to be?
I’d like to be remembered as someone who made every day count —someone that found her own personal reason to exist and spent her time on earth relentlessly pursuing just THAT! My hope is that I will be remembered for living a life that inspired and continues to inspire women from around the world toward Active Living and moving, nourishing and believing in themselves every single day.
