How to Best Care for Your Eyes

Did you have trouble reading any of those? You may not be taking the best care of your eyes that you can. Even if you don’t have 20/20 vision, your eyes still need taken care of.

August is National Eye Exam Month and we want to make sure everyone has healthy eyes!

What are the best ways to take care of my eyes?

There are several everyday things you can do to make sure you are treating your eyes carefully.

1. Sunglasses

Much like wearing sunscreen to protect your skin from getting burned, sunglasses do the same thing for your eyes. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to getting cataracts and macular degeneration, an eye disease that causes loss of vision. Even those with contacts and glasses need eye protection. Don’t neglect your sunglasses!

2. Load up on Vitamin A and Beta Carotene

Vitamin A and Beta Carotene rich foods have been known to lead to good vision. Vitamin A helps to protect the cornea of the eyes (the surface). Beta Carotene, once in the body, actually converts to Vitamin A offering even more protection to the eye area.

3. Step away from the screen

Staring at a computer screen all day can result in dry and tired eyes, headaches, blurry vision and trouble focusing at a distance. Try taking breaks computers and phones.

“But I work in an office. I can’t do my work without being on my computer.” 

Trust us, we understand! It doesn’t have to be a long break. Instead of catching up on Instagram during your lunch break try leaving your phone in the office. If your eyes are getting tired in the middle of work, take a five-minute break. Take a walk around or get a cup of coffee before going back to the screen.

4. Stop smoking 

Smoking can affect more than your mouth and lungs, it can affect your eyes as well. Smoking has been known to lead to getting cataracts, macular degeneration and optic nerve damage.

5. See an eye doctor regularly 

Even if you have perfect vision, visiting an eye doctor can lead to preventative care for your eyes. Getting regular check ups and eye exams can help you make sure your eyes are in the best shape they can be.
