by Alana Cowan

Autumn is the perfect time of year for getting outside and enjoying perfect, post-summer weather and gorgeous fall foliage. And for city dwellers, it’s a great time to gather friends and family in the car for a long ride out to the countryside, where you can experience the full effect of changing leaves and crisp air. Here are five great must-do outdoor activities to get the most out of Autumn this year.

Harvest Celebrations: Enjoy an authentic harvest experience with activities like corn mazes, hayrides and pumpkin patches. On the weekends these great country road attractions will even feature live music, carnival rides, bouncy houses and petting zoos for the kids. Meanwhile you can pick up some of your favorite fall decorations for the house including hay stacks and colorful mum arrangements. More importantly, families can wander through the fields to find the perfect pumpkin to take home.

Run A Race: The leaves are starting to turn yellow, orange and red, which can only mean one thing: it’s time for the great marathons and half marathons. Fall is one of the safest times to run a race of this distance, as the temperature is generally predictable, and the colors are absolutely beautiful! And if you’re not planning to run a marathon, it’s always fun to sit back along the sidelines to cheer on your friends and family.

Apple Picking: When the weather starts to cool, there is no better weekend activity than apple picking. After you’ve roamed the apple orchards and selected the best apples, you can bring them home and make tasty pies, cobblers, breads and cakes. Here are five great recipes from Health Magazine to put all those local apples and seasonal fruit to use, click here.

Haunted Houses: Fall is synonymous with Halloween, and most towns have their own unique ways of creating haunted houses that will scare the living daylights out of you! Most theme parks in your area,  including Six Flags and Dorney Park are also known to prepare a whole slew of activities just to get you in the Halloween spirit. For those living in and around NYC, here’s a great list of haunted houses to consider.

Take a Hot-Air Balloon Ride: A hot air balloon ride is an exhilarating experience. As you float thousands of feet above the Earth’s surface, you can see entire landscapes. Hot air balloon rides during the fall season provide an especially spectacular view of beautiful mountains and fields blanketed with the colors of fall foliage. Hot air balloon rides are also one of the most romantic activities on our list, if your looking for surprise your significant other for a spectacular fall outing.
