Cool off with Cucumber!

by Guest Writer

Sometimes it’s difficult to stay cool as a cucumber in this heat however that should not shy you away from enjoying this delicious vegetable. Cucumber has become a featured flavor in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks this summer and we can’t get enough of its refreshing taste. Even though Labor Day weekend is just around the corner, the dog days of summer probably aren’t going anywhere (thanks to global warming). In order to stay cool and refreshed I’ve pulled together a few drink recipes that feature our favorite green vegetable and will help keep you hydrated for the home stretch of summer.

Cucumber Lemonade

Not sure whether you’re in the mood for sweet, savory or refreshing? With this Rosemary Infused Cucumber Lemonade recipe from Eating Well you don’t have to choose. All of these flavors combined create a somewhat healthy drink that can be dressed up with a fun cucumber garnish or made more casual by pouring it over ice.

Cucumber Mint Spritzer

This cucumber drink can either be alcoholic or non-alcoholic depending on your mood and which bubbly ingredient you choose. Sunset magazine describes it as the perfect picnic drink and from personal experience, I agree. If you choose to use champagne as the base it can be rather sweet where as with seltzer it’s a refreshing mocktail. No matter which ingredient you choose this beverage is sure to be a crowd pleaser. It’s easy to make, full of flavor and delicious!

Cucumber Orange Water

After a few months of sweating and replenishing, water can become rather boring. In order to give your H2O a little boost, try infusing a pitcher with cucumber and orange slices. In 30 minutes you’ll have a refreshing citrusy beverage that you won’t be able to put down.

Cucumber Juice

No juicer, no problem! Cucumber juice is the perfect drink to help you unwind on hot summer afternoon and isn’t that difficult to make with out the clunky and expensive juicer. This recipe from Kitchn allows you to use a food processor and only calls for 6 cucumbers. Taking a swig of this slightly sweet drink will help to cool you down and keep you hydrated during the last month of summer.

Cucumber Martini

If you’re looking for stiffer evening drink, a cucumber martini may be the perfect addition to your summer happy hour routine. This season many restaurants have come out with delicious martini recipes and specials but, you don’t have to stray far from your own kitchen to get your hands on a cocktail like this. A Healthy Life for Me concocted this simple and easy Cucumber Martini recipe that will leave a refreshing taste in your mouth and take the edge off from a long workweek.

Cucumber isn’t the only refreshing summer ingredient in the produce department. What are some other ingredients that you like to add to liven up your summer cocktails?
