Roses –Their Color Has a Lot To Say

Used for hundreds of years to convey messages without words, roses stand alone in their ability to speak volumes! June is Rose Month, and apart from their unique beauty and wonderful fragrance, roses have a rich symbolism that stands alone in its abundant history and color meaning.

RED

A single red rose is a declaration of love. The ultimate symbol of romantic love and enduring passion, the red rose also conveys respect and the creative spirit of love. Representing true love stronger than thorns, the red rose is known universally as the lover’s rose.

PINK

Symbolizing gentility, femininity, elegance and refinement, the pink rose also carries additional meanings depending on its hue. A deep pink conveys gratitude and appreciation, while pale shades connote grace and gentleness, admiration and happiness.

White rose

WHITE

Signifying purity, innocence, and humility, the white rose is often referred to as the bridal rose – associated with young love. It also symbolizes truth and reverence, it sends a message of loyalty and says “I am worthy of you.”

YELLOW

In Victorian times, the yellow rose symbolized jealousy, but today it represents friendship, joy and caring. A bouquet of these sun-filled blossoms conveys warmth, joy, gladness, affection and deep friendship. Often a promise of a new beginning, or a welcome back.

A sign of appreciation and sincerity—peach roses express gratitude and a desire to get together, to keep things moving forward. A lovely way to say thank you.

With their warm, vibrant tones, orange roses symbolize enthusiasm and desire. A bouquet of these fiery blooms will send a message of passion and excitement, expressing admiration and attraction.

LAVENDER & PURPLE

While red roses are the traditional Valentine’s flower, lavender and purple roses send the message of love at first sight. Thought to be almost mystical in nature, with symbolism tied to enchantment and desire.

 

ROSES BY THE NUMBERS – Not only the colors, but the number of roses have very specific meanings:

  1. A single rose of any color depicts utmost devotion.
  2. Two roses entwined together communicate “Marry me.”
  3. Six Roses signify a need to be loved or cherished.
  4. Eleven roses assure the recipient they are truly and deeply loved.
  5. Thirteen roses indicate a secret admirer.
