DIY Face Mask to Soothe Summer Skin

by Lauren Verini

If you’re like me, you love the summer time. Nothing is better than the hot sun shinning on your face, long days at the beach, feet in the sand, salt water in your hair and a good book. The UV rays from the sun can really take a toll on your skin however, leaving it dry, damage and dull. There are so many products in the beauty isle that promise glowing and smooth skin but not all of these products work, not to mention are loaded with harsh chemicals and trying to figure out which one works best for your skin can cost a lot of money. Luckily, there are ingredients in your refrigerator and pantry that can be put to work for a simple, DIY at home facial mask that can give you glowing skin. Best of all, the at home face masks use natural ingredients that are less harsh for your skin, compared with the skin care at your drug store, so people even with the most sensitive skin can try these.

To help hydrate and sooth skin, we found a great concoction for a mask that you can make with items you probably already have in your kitchen: lemon, plain yogurt, banana and honey. To create mask, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, ¼ cup of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon of honey into a bowl until its mixed well. Cut up half a banana into small cubes then mash it up in the bowl and combine with the other ingredients. Apply the mask to your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then wash it off and moisturize your face. To make an exfoliating scrub, skip the banana and replace the yogurt with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, scrub your face gently with the concoction for 2-3 minutes then rinse off and moisturize. The face mask is gentle enough were you can use it a few times a week or as often as needed.

This mask will cleanse your skin and leave it smooth, brighter and more refreshed. It’s perfect to use at the end of a long summer day before you go out on the town. The lemon in the mask contains enzymes that will cleanse away dead skin cells and will even out your skin tone. This is what will give you a naturally brighter look plus the citrus scent of the lemon smells delicious. Honey contains natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties so it’s perfect for your skin. It locks in moisture so it leaves your skin hydrated and glowing. The lactic acid found in the yogurt soothes irritated skin and helps to refine pores. It acts as a cleaner and leaves skin soft and smooth. Lastly, we eat bananas because they are filled with nutrients like potassium, vitamin b and C, and it’s these same nutrients that can do wonders for your complexion including moisturize and soothe away wrinkles.
