Happy Memorial Day

by Guest Writer

Memorial Day is often looked at as: a long weekend, an extra day off work, a day where you can’t visit the bank…etc.

While a long weekend is great, we want to emphasize the importance of the meaning of Memorial Day.

The History

Memorial Day, held on the last Monday in May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic dedicated the day as a time for the nation to “decorate” the graves of those soldiers who lost their lives in the American Civil War with flowers and such.

In the 20th century, Memorial Day became a day to honor and remember ALL veterans who lost their lives fighting for our country. On Memorial Day, we honor those who lost their lives as well as the family members of those whose lives were lost.

We want to thank all of the veterans for serving our country and to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep America free.

Happy Memorial Day.
