Celebrate International Surf Day!

by Sofia

As a powerful work of activism while having fun in the sun, the Surfrider Foundation is celebrating the 9th Annual International Surf Day (ISD) today, June 20th! This is a day we can certainly get behind as they host events across the nation in beach communities, offering up surf lessons, beach cleanup and even food and music in some locations. You can check the Surfrider Foundation site for locations and additional information. Local to us there is an event at Rockaway Beach, which seems especially important this year in the wake of Superstorm Sandy that devastated the area.

Surfrider is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the sustainability of beaches and oceans worldwide. Teaming up with multiple nonprofit organizations, Surfrider has host beach cleanups, dune restorations, surf clinics, and other fun surf-themed activities, while giving homage to a sport that exists in every country that touches an ocean.

International Surf Day embodies all surfers and those inspired to surf. In addition to joining in an official Surf Day event, or just simply getting out there to surf, supporters can also make donations here have the option of signing up at one of four different membership levels: “Good” ($30), “Great” ($125), “Epic” ($225) or “All Time” ($800).  Each of the membership levels include a limited edition International Surfing Day t-shirt, a one-year subscription to TransWorld SURF magazine and a one-year membership to the Surfrider Foundation, in addition to other various perks depending on the sponsorship level.

Whether you live close to an ocean or not, its a great organization supporting the system that makes up 70% of our planet, so be sure to check them out and get involved in some way.
