The Power Of World Kindness To Transform

by

Today is World Kindness Day, a day introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement a coalition of nations kindness NGOs. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates.  Even though this day was introduced years ago, we felt the need to write about it today because it seems like our world needs this reminder more than ever.  We are living in such complicated times and it seems like there is a catastrophic event every other week. Spreading kindness can have such a big transformation in our daily lives  – if we just took a moment to be present and intentional every single day, each of us can have the power to change lives.  Here are 5 ways you can celebrate world kindness day today:

1.  Be kind to yourself.

So many times you forget to take care of the most important person: yourself. It’s necessary to treat yourself well, especially if you tend to always go out of your way for other people. Maybe treat yourself to a massage, or indulge in TV time without feeling guilty  – this will make you feel happier and more at ease.

2.  Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time.

The world of technology has made us a bit lazy. We text instead of calling and send emails instead of sending cards so picking up the phone to actually speak to someone is rare. Especially if you haven’t been in touch for a while, the gesture can be surprisingly pleasant. This could involve a conversation with a neighbor who lived in an area you moved away from, a childhood friend who you’re primarily “in touch” with only through social media updates. Trust us, this will make you and them feel good.

3.  Buy a homeless person breakfast.

Some of us pass by a homeless person every day on our way to work – on world kindness day, why not surprise them with a cup of coffee and a meal. This act of kindness can save someone’s life or at the very least help feed a person who doesn’t know where their next meal comes from.

4.  Leave a note to a friend or family member.

Whether you leave a note on the bathroom mirror or on a car window, simply writing a few words on a piece of paper such as ‘you look gorgeous today!’ or ‘have an amazing day’ is a great way to boost someone’s confidence and ensure their mood is a good one.

5.  Smile at everyone you see.

Smiles have a lot of power. A smile can be the difference maker on someone’s day. Studies have shown that smiling will also improve your health by reducing stress, boosting your immune system, lowering your blood pressure and making you look younger. Next time someone opens the door for you, say thank you with a smile. 🙂
