NYC Frida Kahlo Botanical Garden

by Alux Loyola

I was looking for something to do for my mother’s birthday; I gave my sister a call to discuss the possibilities. After a quick conversation we decided we would surprise her with a trip to the New York Botanical Garden for the Frida Kahlo exhibit they currently have running. Frida Kahlo is an excellent link between the garden and the world of art as her work is filled with flora and fauna. The exhibit features a recreation of Frida Kahlo’s garden and portions of Casa Azul which is her historic home and now museum in Coyoacan in Mexico City. The exhibit also features over a dozen original Kahlo paintings.

My uncles surprised my mother at her house and we hopped in the car headed over the George Washington Bridge and drove up town. In a strange twist of fate my mother, who didn’t know where we were taking her, was trying to coordinate a trip to the Botanical Garden to see the exhibit later this month. She was very pleased as we pulled in to the parking lot.

There were many different plants, too many to count. One of my favorite plants was the Platycerium Willinckii, a type of fern that they had suspended from the ceiling. The exhibit also features a large variety of cacti including an Organ Pipe Cactus fence similar to the one at her husband Diego River’s home.

The paintings showcased in exhibit were truly striking, however, photography was not permitted. You will have to go see it yourself!

The Frida Kahlo Art, Garden, Life exhibit will be on view through November 1, 2015 at he New York Botanical Garden. The New York Botanical garden is located in 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx NY 10458. It is worth the trip The Bronx and offers a full day surrounded by nature. In addition to the Frida Kahlo exhibit the garden offers other special exhibitions, a children’s adventure garden and a tram tour of the facility.
