How to prevent summer breakouts

by Sara White

Just when you think you have your skin-care regiment down to a perfect science, the summertime air sends your pores into shock- resulting in frustrating blackheads and breakouts that may be more preventable than you think.

So, what about the Summer makes your Skin Breakout?

According to well-renown dermatologist Dr. Rodan, “Heat and humidity intensify oil production, which is acne prone individuals often means more breakouts.” So, on top of the summer’s heat and humidity over-working your sebaceous glands to produce more oil, additional factors such as environmental pollutants, sweating more than usual and exposing your skin to frequent temperature changes (AC versus outdoors), makes your pores all the more susceptible to clogging up.

How Can I Help Prevent This?

Here are some tips on how to prevent some of the worst summer breakouts- helping your skin achieve a flawless summer glow!

1. Let Your Skin Breathe

While the best way to keep your pores clean in the summer may be to go make-up free, sometimes this isn’t always as easy as it sounds. To lighten to load, try putting your heavier foundation aside for an oil-free, tinted moisturizer that will give you coverage and color without over-clogging your pores.

My personal favorites are Tarte’s Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer, with Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen (check it out here!), and of course the more affordable Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer, which you can learn more about here.

2. Keep Facial Cleansing Wipes on Hand

Even if you try to use a face-wash regularly, often times it’s hard to keep up with this when you’re constantly on the go. It’s imperative to cleanse your pores of the toxins and dirt they absorb on a daily basis, and the best way to become consistent with this is to keep a small-pack of face wipes in your bag for easy access.

3. Tone!

Using a detoxifying toner is one of the best ways to remove impurities, dust, and pollution from your skin, giving you effective ways to hydrate your skin while removing dead skin cells that accumulate from over-sun exposure.

Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions Clarifying Toner, as well as their Rosewater Toner, are two great options for keeping your skin fresh and clean this summer!

4. Benzoyl Peroxide

Don’t wait for acne to appear on your skin. Before bed, apply a thin layer of spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide onto acne-prone areas of your skin. This will help stop breakouts from emerging and keep you one step ahead! Use this sparingly as it may dry out your skin. To avoid this, use products with lower percentages of benzoyl peroxide in it, such as this!
