Health Benefits of Berries

In this day and age, we are constantly bombarded by “new,” “exciting” and “innovative” products meant to make us healthier with something as simple as a single pill. And while modern medicine has made fantastic strides in recent years, sometimes it’s the simple things that have impact.

Growing up, we’ve all heard our parents tell us, “Don’t forget to eat your fruits and veggies!” And as per usual, your parents are right.

Nature’s candy, fruit is pivotal to a balanced diet and can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing. Berries, in particular, have an abundance of health benefits that are bound to put you on that healthy track.

The berry family (including fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries) is known for being chock full of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins that keep your immune system and digestive system running smoothly.

For example, one cup of strawberries contains more vitamin C than a large orange, and have been shown to protect against multiple forms of cancer, as well as inflammation and diabetes.

Meanwhile, blueberries are one of the health industries most prized possessions due to their immense amounts of antioxidants, potassium and manganese. Research has shown that by increasing your blueberry intake, you are at a lower chance of developing heart disease, and have a higher chance of improving your brain function in regards to memory, balance and coordination.

Another great reason to increase your berry intake? Beauty!

With high amounts of anthocyanin, berries are fantastic at reducing damage from pollution and free radicals that your skin is faced with on a daily basis. Berries are also filled with ellagic acid and essential fatty acids that are key in reducing hyperpigmentation and inflammation caused by acne. Ellagic acid is an antioxidant that protects the skin from the harsh rays of the sun and the breaking of collagen in the skin. The short story? Berries are a true savior from wrinkles!

Overall, these little nuggets from nature are going to be your body’s new best friend and can easily be incorporated into your diet. Try tossing together a fruit salad, a smoothie, or even topping off a dessert with some fresh berries and you’re good to go!
